Surfing Waves
by:  Tenneille Samus

If there were a book about the 'how to of surfing waves for beginners' I would have been the first one to eat it up; but at two years old I couldn't read, didn't know what waves were or surfing, and actually enjoyed playing in my cloth diapers in the white wash that covered the shore. At that age I loved the taste of the ocean. It was like candy for me, calling me back to the water again and again. I loved the ocean, I swam and fished and 'boogie boarded' for the majority of my young life. The only thing that I didn't do was surf. I had seen it done before but never thought to try it and didn't know where to start. I didn't even have friends that surfed and that would've been my connection.  read more

Basic Surf Tips for Beginners

Basic Surfing Tip #1: Surfboards

Let's start with the obvious: Surfboards are made to float on the water. They have a natural center of gravity. If you were to lay any surfboard in a swimming pool, it would come to rest the same way every time. This is what we want to do when you lay on a surf board. That is to have the board remain in the same relation to the water as it was without your weight on it, just a bit lower in the water. A good tip is to find this balance point and lay on your board then make, a mark right at your chin. This is a spot is best made with a bit of wax or a magic marker. It is a reference point that enables you to put your chin on the same spot every time so the board will react to your weight the same way every time. Read more

Not only will it minimize ding potential, but it will protect your board from the yellowing effects of u.v. rays. Read More

How to choose your first surfboard

by: Jay Dimartino

Nothing is more important to the beginning surfer than choosing the right first board. Those thin, narrow rockets the stars are riding sure look exciting, but they are a disaster for surfers learning initial techniques. Therefore, keep these tips in mind when choosing your first surfboard.

Your First Surfboard should be Cheap

While learning how to surf, you're going to ding and scratch a board if you really put it to use, so don't spend too much cash. A $400 surfboard will ding as easy as a $100 surfboard. It's not about looks, so ignore minor yellowing and small dings. Read more
